Culinary Journey of Costa Rica

Costa Rica has abundant nature, biodiversity, and beaches, which have led to a boom for ecotourism in Costa Rica, but its cuisine is not so world famous.

COSTA RICAN CUISINE

Costa Rican food doesn’t often rank as highly since many travellers mistakenly imagine Costa Rica as Many think of Costa Rica as just another Latin American country of quesadillas, burritos & tacos however typical Costa Rican cuisine is refreshing, varied and mild, with a strong use of fruits & vegetables. Black beans & rice are served with every meal. Food is an important part of Costa Rican culture; celebrations & family gatherings.

In the past, the Chorotega & other indigenous Costa Ricans largely consumed maize, modern Costa Rican cuisine is influenced by the Spanish with the use of corn in dishes such as tamales. Costa Rica has long coasts on both side of the country, the Caribbean coast has many Afro-Caribbean influences on its food. The national dish is Gallo Pinto, a dish consisting of rice & black beans with with onions & coriander, served for breakfast with eggs, tortillas & sour cream.

COSTA RICAN DRINKS

Coffee… has been a top export of Costa Rica, back in the 1830s, laws required each family to plant coffee bushes on their land. Coffee & the culture surrounding it is deeply embedded in Costa Rican cultures, Costa Rica has eight coffee regions; 80,0000+ coffee producer & a well-deserved reputation for some of the world’s best coffee beans.

In recent years, Costa Rican has undergone an alcohol revolution with artisanal breweries popping up all over the country. The national drink is Guaro Sour, Guaro, or Cacique, is the official liquor of Costa Rica. This sugarcane-derived alcohol is similar to rum but tastes a bit more like vodka. Other popular alcoholic drinks & cocktails include Malacrianza Beer, Chiliguaro & Jaguar Coladas

Fresh fruit drinks made from the abundance of tropical fruits growing in Costa Rica are popular – including sour guava, passionfruit, tamarind,soursop, pineapple, watermelon, blackberry, strawberry, papaya, mango, banana. They are made with en leche (in milk) or en agua (in water).
